As reported by The Birmingham Mail, Newcastle United are one of the sides interested in signing free agent Abel Hernandez ahead of the new season.
After securing a top ten finish in the English Premier League at the weekend, Newcastle are definitely on a high and fans are eager to see how Rafa Benitez builds on his squad to perhaps help them move further up the table next season.
One player on his radar is Abel Hernandez, according to The Birmingham Mail.
The outlet reckon the striker, who is out of contract after a spell at Hull City, is wanted by sides like Celtic, Wolves and Nottingham Forest, alongside the Magpies.
Ordinarily rated at £6.3m by Transfermarkt, is this a deal that Newcastle should be pursuing this summer?
While Abel Hernandez has proven himself to be a capable goalscorer in the second-tiers of both English and Italian football, his record in the Premier League and Serie A is a little more sketchy.
Scoring 28 goals in 49 appearances for Hull in the Championship, it’s clear he can be a lethal force at that level, most recently demonstrated after his return from long-term injury in March and April of this year.
With just 8 goals in 48 top-flight appearances for the club though, he’s struggled to make a similar impact when making the step up.
That’s a potential problem for Newcastle if they pursue the deal. While it might make sense from a budget, back-up point of view, they are in dire need of an elite striker who can be more clinical next term.
Is Hernandez that man? The jury is certainly out.
Rafa Benitez is currently working wonders with the likes of Ayoze Perez and Mohamed Diame however, so who’s to say he doesn’t see something in the Uruguayan international that could be a hit at St James’ Park?
