According to reports, Newcastle are one of a number of clubs interested in a £25million move for Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand.
Newcastle are set to compete with Manchester United, Tottenham and Everton for Ryan Bertrand’s signature this summer, as the 28 year-old left back is ready to quit Southampton.
The report claims Bertrand will leave the club whether they escape relegation or not, and could be available for around £25m.
Manchester United want the England international if they fail to get Danny Rose from Tottenham, while Spurs could pursue Bertrand as Rose’s replacement if he does leave.
Newcastle will obviously have a fight on their hands, but the prospect of guaranteed playing time and playing for Rafael Benitez could lure the flying full back to Tyneside.
Some of the Toon Army might take issue with the idea that Bertrand would be guaranteed playing time at St. James’ given the fantastic form of local lad Paul Dummett, but Bertrand would undoubtedly be an upgrade.
Dummett’s hard work and passion for the shirt has endeared him to fans, but Bertrand is superior both technically and athletically, and just needs the right manager to push him to his best, which Rafa Benitez could certainly do.
Bertrand, valued at £17.5million by Transfermarkt, would be an excellent addition to the Newcastle team and a real statement of intent by the club.
Whether Mike Ashley is still in charge next season is yet to be seen, but if new owners do come in they will surely want to make a few early statements, and a 19-cap England international full back would be an excellent start.
