Newcastle have been linked with a move for Guinean midfielder Mohamed Camara, and the 21-year-old could be the perfect midfield partner for Jonjo Shelvey.

What's the story?

According to reports, Newcastle sent scouts to watch Camara, who plays as a holding midfielder for Olympiakos.

The youngster joined the Greek giants for free this summer after two impressive seasons with French club Ajaccio, and the report claims the Magpies will battle Eintracht Frankfurt for his signature.

The report says Olympiakos did not expect him to become a first team regular when he joined the club, so it would be no surprise if they decide to cash in as quickly as possible.

A long-term solution?

The Magpies signed Ki Sung-yeung on a free transfer this summer, but the midfielder turns 30 in January, so a long-term partner for Shelvey is still a priority. Mo Diame fulfilled that role wonderfully last season, but Senegalese international is 31, and has not played well so far this season.

In many ways, Camara is your typical defensive midfielder, and might remind some fans of Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi. He covers an incredible amount of ground, and his wiry strength allows him to win those key midfield battles.

He reads the game fantastically for such a young player, and like Diame has the ability to roam forward from midfield with the ball. He’s also not afraid to pop up with a goal or two, scoring one of the goals of the season just last week.

The youngster’s one weakness right now is his passing, though that is something that could be easily improved under the tutelage of Rafael Benitez.

Camara is not perfect, but the youngster has all the tools to out-perform both Ki and Diame. His strength and athleticism would suit the Premier League, and if the Magpies can get him in January they should definitely pull the trigger.
