Bafetimbi Gomis otherwise referred to as ‘Baby Drogba’, is a 27-year-old centre forward for Olympique Lyonnais. He has been linked with a move to the Premier League and Newcastle United this summer but the interest from the Magpies has been long withstanding since 2008.
He was a product of the Saint Etienne youth system and burst onto the scene in 2004 as a fully fledged squad player. The current French international found it difficult to make an impact and had to move out on loan to Troyes before returning to his parent club, where he finally made a name for himself.
In July 2009, following a season where he lit up the Europa League with his predatory instinct with three goals in four appearances, he moved onto to Lyon for €13million.
And it is his career at Lyon that has really helped him sparkle and garner the attention of the European elite. His highlights include a four-goal brace in the final round of Champions League group games in the 2011-2012 season and the physical forward can also boast the record for scoring the fastest Champions League hat-trick – a record he clawed away from Mike Newell.
Despite not being able to fully secure a starting place in the French national team he has been in a rich vein of form over the last few seasons. It is however no secret that Lyon’s prized asset is in the final year of his contract at the Stade de Gerland and his club would rather receive a fee this transfer window then let him leave on a free next July.
