Edin Dzeko proves he would be the perfect number nine for Newcastle United

According to reports in The Sun on April 21, Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is looking to sign a new number nine for the club this summer.

The Spanish manager can start making plans for the top flight next season after the Magpies surpassed the magic 40-point mark earlier this month, and The Sun claims that one of his priorities is Bournemouth’s Josh King – a move Toon supporters on Twitter said they would back.

Given that Islam Slimani is only on loan from Leicester City, Aleksandar Mitrovic is looking increasingly likely to leave following his impressive loan spell with Fulham, and Joselu struggling for form and confidence, that isn’t too surprising.

Benitez also said he would like to add some experience to his squad following the 1-0 defeat against Everton at Goodison Park on Monday night, and you have to wonder whether he would have been watching AS Roma striker Edin Dzeko, rated at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, in action in his side’s Champions League semi-final first leg tie against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday.

The Italian club suffered a nightmare defensively as they conceded five times, but the Bosnia and Herzegovina attacker did well at the other end of the pitch, scoring his team’s first goal in the closing stages when he swept home Radja Nainggolan’s cross – taking his tally to 21 in all competitions this term.

That was one of two shots on target for the 32-year-old, whose contract is due to run out in 2020, while he also showed that he has a creative side as well with two key passes, as well as his tall frame allowing him to be a real threat in the air – he won seven aerial duels against the Reds, as per WhoScored.com.

While making a move for Dzeko would certainly be hugely ambitious by the Tyneside outfit, if they do want to push on and progress next season and beyond then he should be the type of player they make a big effort to bring to St James’ Park, and he would be a hugely efficient number nine for them with plenty of Premier League experience.
