Italian heavyweights Roma are expecting former Chelsea defender Ashley Cole to leave the club in January, despite a rejected switch to Newcastle on transfer deadline day, according to reports from talkSPORT.
The ex-England international has been with the Serie A club for just over a year after joining them on a free transfer when his Chelsea contract expired.
However, he made only 11 league appearances in his debut campaign at the Stadio Olimpico, which led to speculation that he was set to move on during the recently closed window.
Reports from talkSPORT – citing Gazzetta dello Sport – claim that the 34-year-old rejected a late offer from Newcastle, but that he is likely to leave Roma in the New Year.
Cole has less than 12 months remaining on his contract and will not be offered fresh terms, which could prompt him to pursue a cut-price January move.
It remains unclear as to whether or not Newcastle will make a fresh approach.
