Newcastle fans cannot take their eyes off the takeover rumours swirling around the club, but they are not forgetting what is really important either – the future of Rafael Benitez.
A report from The Sun sent Twitter into meltdown over the weekend, claiming that Mike Ashley has agreed to sell the Magpies.
Since then, there has been countless conflicting rumours and reports, with the truth about Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed Al Nehayan’s attempted takeover of the club probably somewhere in the middle.
The Toon Army have been here before though, and while this is certainly not just another ploy from Ashley to avoid spending money in the transfer market, there are some who are concerned it is a distraction from the future of Benitez.
The Spaniard has worked wonders with a sub-standard squad at St. James’ Park, and will be out of contract at the end of next month.
The Evening Chronicle have confirmed talks have taken place for a new deal, but with no concrete progress yet, fans on Twitter are desperate for developments.
Have a look at the Twitter reactions down below…
I said from the moment it happened it was a smoke screen for Rafa’s contract talks not a whisper from the media or the club on a new contract in days. Mark my words rafa has left already and this is another rumour to cover it Ashley knows what he’s doing

Feel like a rafa 8 year contract should be top priority

@PeteGravesSky notice how noone is talking about Rafa and his contract anymore. The season still starts at the same time with our without a takeover. Focus should be on that and Rafa. Having Rafa signed up surely adds value for the club.

Pretty much every journalist is hedging their bets so its impossible to know what to believe. Mission accomplished by Ashley in fudging the Rafa contract talks

Takeover or no takeover. Rafas contract needs to be done this week. no excuses. Not to mention #nufc will start missing out on its first choice targets or they will get too expensive as Rafa warned and them the club is left signing fifth choice options like Joselu

Why do we fall for this every year. Ashley does it to detract attention from the pressing issues . In this instance around Rafa’s contract. Upsetting to see our fans fall for it every time. #daretodream
