French star still keen on Newcastle move

Lyon Striker Bafetimbi Gomis

Newcastle United target Bafetimbi Gomis will not be signing a new contract at Lyon, reports the Daily Star.

The French forward was close to joining the Toon for £8million, only for the deal to break down over agents’ fees.

But into the last year of his contract, Gomis has made it clear that he is prepared to leave on a free transfer next summer, unless he gets his wish and leaves the Stade der Gerland this transfer window. Newcastle were reportedly preparing a new bid for Gomis regardless of this news.

United manager Alan Pardew has had a frustrating transfer window so far, with the loan signing of Loic Remy the only significant addition to his squad. Now working alongside Joe Kinnear to bring in new players, Pardew is looking for new players, while also keen on holding onto midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

Pardew is still looking for a new striker, after missing out on Darren Bent. The English forward has joined Fulham on loan, and Pardew might go back in for Gomis to fill his desire for a new forward.

“We are still short. We are short of Demba Ba,” the Newcastle manager said.

“That’s what it looks like and until Remy is fit or we get another striker, it will be a problem for us.”

Newcastle face West Ham on Sunday, with Papiss Cisse expected to lead the line of attack on his own.

Would Gomis do well at Newcastle? Is there someone else you would rather see join the Toon?
