Giroud would light up Newcastle United’s attack, but transfer is a pipe dream

According to Sky Sports News, Atletico Madrid have contacted Chelsea regarding a deal for Olivier Giroud, and perhaps Newcastle United should be doing the same.

What’s the word?

The striker moved to Stamford Bridge from Arsenal in January, but he was given a bit-part role at the West London outfit.

In total, Giroud made 18 appearances in all competitions, but he was named in the starting lineup just 10 times.

During that spell, the forward scored five goals and created a single assist.

According to Sky Sports News, Atletico are keen to sign Giroud on loan, but Chelsea would prefer a permanent deal.

Why should Newcastle be interested?

Dwight Gayle and Joselu failed to impress up front for the Magpies last season.

Rafael Benitez could do with a new figure to lead the line, and Giroud would certainly bolster the manager’s current options.

Despite the forward’s lacklustre efforts of late, he does have 76 Premier League goals to his name, and with the right service, he could thrive as a poacher in the box.

Despite failing to score at the World Cup, Giroud will arriving back in England with a winning mentality as he and his France teammates managed to clinch the trophy in Russia.

Given that Newcastle have already agreed a loan deal with Chelsea for Kenedy, any agreement for Giroud would have to be a permanent deal.

Club owner Mike Ashley has once again been stingy with the transfer funds, so it is highly unlikely that the Magpies could afford Giroud.

There is no doubt that the striker would drastically improve Newcastle’s attacking options, but a deal seems like a long shot.
