Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas has provided insight into how Newcastle are currently feeling about Jarrod Bowen, and what type of fee it would take to land the winger.

What’s been said?

Bowen appears to have been a target for the Magpies throughout January and at one point they were set to bid for the player.

The Hull star has been in mesmeric form in the Championship, scoring 16 times, but a move to the Premier League still looks to be in some doubt.

His contract expires at the end of the season and the Tigers have still been demanding a hefty fee for his services in January.

Speaking on the Everything is Black & White Podcast (29/01/2020), Douglas revealed the following about Newcastle’s current stance on the player:

"With him, I was told over the weekend that Hull’s asking price was not £18m-£20m - it was £3m loan fee, £25m at the end of it. So the deal as a whole would be £28m which is why Newcastle walked away from it. They haven’t walked away from it because it’s £18m or £19m - they don’t believe at this point that a player who has not played Premier League football is worth that kind of money.

"So would Hull come down significantly to where Newcastle could do a deal, £18m-£19m with a £3m loan fee? It’s up to the Hull end - I don’t think they would. Bruce likes him but he’s aware of his limitations as well as the things he can do. I think he would be a great signing."

Strange stance

The fact that Newcastle are reportedly not convinced by the fact he hasn’t played in the Premier League is a bizarre viewpoint but they will be all too aware of what Dwight Gayle hasn’t produced despite being a sensation in the second tier.

He scored 24 times for West Brom last season but has been nothing short of unconvincing this term, failing to hit the back of the net.

However, he is 29 years of age, whereas Bowen has the rest of his career to flourish and potentially prosper.

The 23-year-old is a free-scoring winger who would help to bolster Newcastle’s forward line significantly and players of a similar variety have already taken to the top-flight like a duck to water.

Is life under Ashley really that bad? Maybe this quiz will change your minds, Newcastle fans...

Just look at James Maddison for instance. He made the switch from Norwich to Leicester and went on to make 100 key passes last season, while Mason Mount has contributed to seven goals in league action after returning to Chelsea from Derby.

With Joelinton scoring twice all season, the Magpies are clearly in need of more goals. Landing Bowen, therefore, could well solve that issue. Their stance is foolish.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are in the market for someone with eight goals in six matches against them...
