Newcastle are looking to revamp their forward line this summer, so should they make a surprise swoop for Jermain Defoe?

Aleksandar Mitrovic is expected to leave Newcastle this summer, and Rafael Benitez will certainly want a marquee number nine to be his new target man.

While Defoe would not fill this role, Dwight Gayle’s position could be under threat as well, after the speedy striker struggled on his return to the Premier League.

Gayle was a fantastic goalscorer in the Championship, but he just isn’t good enough to fire the Magpies towards the Europa League places, and adding Defoe alongside a new number nine would completely transform the attack.

The Chronicle list the 35 year-old as a possible target for this summer, and his age and lack of playing time at Bournemouth could make him available for a bargain price.

The former Sunderland man has scored over 150 Premier League goals, and having him on the bench to support whoever that Mitrovic replacement is would be one hell of a good deal for the Magpies.
