HYS: Should Newcastle swoop for Torres?

Newcastle have been named as the bookmakers’ favourites to land Fernando Torres on a free transfer this summer – but would the Spaniard be a good fit at Newcastle?

It’s been an up and down season for Newcastle fans, “up and down” in this case meaning a lot of downs followed by an entire month of ups.

Following their incredible 1-0 victory over Manchester United, the Magpies have won three straight Premier League games, two against relegation rivals, and are now more worried about making the top ten than avoiding relegation.

Ayoze Perez has started to blossom into the player fans always hoped he could be, Martin Dubravka has solved a lot of the defensive issues, and Jamaal Lascelles has turned into Franz Beckenbauer.

All that said, there is definitely still room for improvement on Tyneside, especially if Rafael Benitez plans to stay and keep the club out of any future relegation trouble.

Benitez’s expert organisation should always keep the Magpies fairly tight at the back, but they are still short of goals, so Fernando Torres – who Transfermarkt value at just £3.6million – could be the perfect free signing when his contract runs out this summer.

He has played with Benitez before, has Premier League experience, title winning experience, and most importantly of all he knows where the net is.

34 years of age or not, Torres would be a great impact substitute for Newcastle, and would have a fabulous influence on the likes of Perez and Dwight Gayle.

So Newcastle fans, would you like to sign Torres for free this summer? Let us know by voting in the poll below…
