As reported by The Mirror, Newcastle United are interested in signing Manchester United defender Luke Shaw on loan in January.

What's the story?

Newcastle have struggled to fill their left-back slot all season with injury keeping Paul Dummett out of action after his stellar season in the Championship last term. While he's close to a first team return, adding quality in that area would be a big boost to their flagging defence this January.

To that end, Rafa Benitez is on the hunt for a cost-effective move for Manchester United defender Luke Shaw, according to The Mirror, who say that Jose Mourinho could be open to a loan deal for the England international in January.

Rated at £16.2m by Transfermarkt and having cost United more than that, the Magpies aren't in a position to sign him outright but a loan move could be the perfect deal for all parties as Shaw looks to rebuild his career.

Forgotten man

Shaw has become something of a fringe figure at the Red Devils under Jose Mourinho, making just two appearances this season, both of which came in the EFL Cup, a trophy not exactly high on the priority list at Old Trafford.

While he has had his fair share of injury problems, his issues at United go beyond that, seemingly unable to convince his manager he can be trusted in the top-flight.

At Newcastle though he could get the regular action he needs to progress his game. Still just 22 years of age, his career is far from finished and if he can get back to playing and performing well, he can still have a future at one of the big clubs in England.
