Newcastle United are interested in signing Crystal Palace left-back Pape Souare on loan for the rest of the season, according to talkSPORT presenter Geoff Peters.

What's the word?

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez made it clear in the summer that he did not have the perfect transfer window.

The Spaniard now has an opportunity to add some new players to the squad.

A large number of rumoured transfer targets have been linked with loan moves to St James' Park.

On this occasion, talkSPORT presenter Peters has claimed that Newcastle have opened talks with Palace over the signing Souare on a temporary basis.

There is believed to be a desire from all involved to get a deal done.

Is Souare a good option for the Magpies?

Benitez has seemingly been hunting for a left-back for a while due to Paul Dummett's lengthy injury absence.

The defender has been on the sidelines for the majority of the season so far with an injury that he picked up on the opening day of the campaign in August.

The 26-year-old has since returned to the fold, playing in four games so far.

From Souare's point of view, the move would be a positive one as he is in need of some game time.

For Newcastle, though, there is a risk involved given the left-back's injury history.

The 27-year-old had to fight back to fitness after breaking his leg in a car crash in September 2016.

Since his recovery, Souare has struggled to secure a regular spot in the team, having made just three appearances in all competitions this season.

Bringing in a left-back with little game time during a relegation battle, may not be the wisest move.
