In Focus: Newcastle eye Llorente swoop

According to AS, Newcastle United are interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente on loan before the January transfer window slams shut.

What’s the story?

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez is absolutely desperate to boost his squad before the window closes on Wednesday night.

The continued uncertainty surrounding the ownership of the club has made it difficult for Benitez to spend this month, but at least one new face is expected to come through the door on transfer deadline day.

According to AS, Benitez is hopeful of agreeing a loan deal for Llorente, who has struggled for regular action at the Bernabeu this season.

It was actually Benitez that handed Llorente his Real Madrid debut in October 2015, and the Magpies boss wants a reunion with the midfielder.

Deportivo La Coruna are also said to be in the hunt, however, and it might well be that Llorente decides to continue his development in Spain.

Would Llorente suit the Premier League?

An energetic midfielder with an impressive range of passing, Llorente excelled during a loan spell at Alaves during the 2016-17 campaign.

The 23-year-old returned to Real Madrid last summer with the view to breaking into the first team, but has found it difficult to displace the likes of Casemiro, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

Indeed, Llorente, who is valued at £13.5m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has only made six La Liga appearances this term, with the majority of his football coming in the Copa del Rey.

Another loan move is exactly what the Spaniard needs at this stage of his career, and there is no question that he has the credentials to operate in the Premier League.

He would compliment Jonjo Shelvey in the middle of the park, whilst his all-actions style could quickly make him a favourite with the Newcastle supporters.

It would be a terrific signing if Benitez could pull this particular deal off.
