Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles says the club are not scared of anyone as they get set to battle two relegation rivals in the coming weeks.
Rafa Benitez’s side were quite simply outclassed by Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, but can certainly take some positives from the game – like the fact that Liverpool had just three shots on target.
“They’re probably up there with the best front threes in Europe,” Lascelles told the Sunderland Echo.
“Liverpool were the better team, but we will beat good teams in future.”
“I don’t think we should be scared of anyone. We beat Man United the other week, and it’s just about whoever turns up on the day in football.”
The games that could really decide the relegation race are still to come this month. Southampton travel to Tyneside this Saturday before Huddersfield Town make the trip to St. James’ Park at the end of the month.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side have massively underachieved this season, and a win for Newcastle could move them five points clear of the drop zone.
“We knew it was going to be tough going to Anfield.
“Liverpool were the better team, but we will beat good teams in the future.”
Newcastle still have to travel to Wembley to face Tottenham and will also play Chelsea and Arsenal in the run-in, but the Magpies’ skipper says they have nothing to fear.
Benitez’s side are not the only ones with a difficult road ahead, as Crystal Palace face Chelsea and Liverpool in the coming weeks and Southampton travel to Arsenal before welcoming Chelsea and Manchester City to St. Mary’s.
If the rest of the squad buy in to Lascelles’ confidence though, it might not matter who the Magpies have to play.
