Jamaal Lascelles epitomised the grit that Newcastle United showed to secure a 1-0 victory against Chelsea.

On the chalkboard

Isaac Hayden's 93rd-minute header may have been the moment that blew the roof off of St James' Park, but it was the work that preceded it which made the goal so special.

Steve Bruce's men had just 30% of possession in the whole game, 12 fewer shots than Chelsea and only won one corner, yet it is the home side who walked away from the game with all three points.

A large reason behind that is the grit and determination they showed, ensuring the likes of Tammy Abraham and Willian left the North East without adding a further goal to their tally for the season.

Epitomising Newcastle's grit

If you want to find somebody who epitomised that attitude throughout the game, there is no need to look any further than Lascelles, who was rock solid at the heart of the defence.

It, perhaps, offers an indication into how instinctive his defending was that he didn't actually make any tackles or interceptions during the entire game.

He was more focused on getting rid of the ball and winning his battles, as shown by the fact that an impressive 11 clearances were made, while he also won all five of his aerial duels - that is impressive considering he will often have been coming directly up against Abraham.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all 25 of these obscure Newcastle signings...

The 26-year-old wasn't too bothered about getting on the ball, attempting 16 passes in the whole game, with only Jetro Willems and Allan Saint-Maximin making fewer out of Newcastle's starters.

That doesn't mean that he showed a lack of quality when he did have it though, as Jonjo Shelvey and Joelinton were his only teammates who exceeded the 81% pass success rate that he managed.

Overall, Lascelles put in a brilliant performance that epitomised the team's grit on the day and he deserves plenty of credit for the clean sheet and three points that were claimed.
