Newcastle United pulled off a superb smash-and-grab victory against Chelsea, but Jonjo Shelvey was able to add some finesse in the middle of the pitch.

On the chalkboard

The Magpies were dominated for large parts of the game, with Chelsea having 70% of possession, 12 more shots and nine more corners than the home side.

However, it is Steve Bruce's men who came out of the game with all three points, after Isaac Hayden headed Allan Saint-Maximin's cross past Kepa Arrizabalaga in the 93rd minute.

It was a deserved reward for what was an extremely resolute performance, but amid some of the team's chaotic play, Shelvey was able to remain precise, adding a bit of finesse to their display.

Adding finesse

The 27-year-old completed 82% of his attempted passes as per WhoScored, which was the joint-highest among Newcastle's starters alongside Joelinton.

He wasn't just passing the ball for the sake of it though, as is indicated by the fact that he made a total of three key passes - a number that was only exceeded by Willian and Mason Mount, who both played four. This is pretty impressive, considering how little of the ball the home side had.

With that considered, it should not be too much of a surprise that the six-cap England international saw more of the ball than any of his teammates, as Ciaran Clark's 3.4% of the game's overall possession was closest to his 4%.

Outside of that, he had one shot that went on target and completed the one attempted dribble made during the 90 minutes.

Defensively, Shelvey completed the one tackle that he committed to, while also making three clearances and one interception.

This was a brilliant result for the club, taking them seven points clear of the relegation zone, and Shelvey deserves plenty of credit for the part he played in securing it.

Meanwhile, the celebrations of a Newcastle legend were captured after Hayden's winner.
