Martin Skrtel looks like a quick fix for Newcastle

According to Turkish outlet A Spor, Rafa Benitez is keen to reunite with former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel by bringing the Fenerbahce player to Newcastle

What’s the story?

Martin Skrtel made a name for himself as a hard-as-nails defender at the heart of the Liverpool defence for eight years.

He was sold to Turkish club Fenerbahce in 2016 where he has since made 52 appearances, scoring five goals.

Now according to A Spor, Benitez is eager to bring the Serbian defender back to England and a club official has already jetted out to complete the deal.

Current Newcastle centre-backs Chancel Mbemba and Jamaal Lascelles are the subject of transfer rumours, so Benitez is clearly in need of strengthening this part of the team.

Would he be a good signing?

We all know what to expect from Skrtel and he is a solid presence at the back that can chip in with a goal.

But at 33, there are doubts about how long he can play at the top level, and Newcastle fans would surely prefer someone who could help the team longer term.

Skrtel looks like a quick fix who was already fading when he was at Liverpool and Newcastle would do well to look elsewhere if they want to shore up their defence for the coming years.
