Mawson signature would be a big boost to Newcastle’s defence next season

As reported by The Daily Mail, Newcastle United are one of the teams interested in signing Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson this summer.

What’s the story?

If Rafa Benitez’s side are going to climb the table next season from their 10th-placed finish this term, they’ll need a strong summer transfer window and improvements throughout the first team.

One name on their radar is Swansea City’s committed defender Alfie Mawson.

That’s according to The Daily Mail, who say that Newcastle have joined Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, West Ham United and Leicester City in the hunt for his signature.

He is currently rated as worth £10.8m by Transfermarkt, although The Mail warn that despite being relegated, Swansea are only willing to sell at the right price.

Is he what Newcastle need?

Mawson is one of the few Swansea players that comes out of the 2017/18 with any credit after their relegation and it seemed inevitable there would be intense Premier League interest in his transfer this summer.

Still just 24 years of age, he’s got the potential to be future England regular.

Physically strong, the defender is also proficient moving out of defence with the ball at his feet, making him the perfect modern centre-back for a fast-paced, possession-heavy Premier League.

Paired with the reliable Jamaal Lascelles, the Magpies could end up having one of the most exciting defences in the division, giving them the anchor to really push on and improve next season.
