Newcastle are chasing deals for Kenedy and Andros Townsend this summer, but Tottenham’s summer business could clear the way for the Magpies to sign a much better winger.

What's the story?

According to Kicker (via Calcio Mercato), Tottenham have made a €50m (£44m) bid for Borussia Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic. Kicker is one of the more reliable sources in Germany, and they correctly broke Son Heung-min’s move to North London in 2015.

Mauricio Pochettino is chasing another attacker this summer, presumably to take some of the pressure Harry Kane by surrounding the talisman with bags of pace, creativity and goals.

Tottenham’s pursuit of a young, exciting winger could mean the end for one man though – Erik Lamela.

The 26 year-old started just seven Premier League games last season as he struggled with injuries, and seems to be at the bottom of the pecking order for those attacking spots behind Kane, meaning he could leave the club.

Newcastle meanwhile are in the market for more attacking firepower, particularly on the wing. They have been chasing Kenedy for quite some time after his loan success, and a return for Andros Townsend could also be on the cards if Matt Ritchie leaves.

Lamela is better than both players, and has more experience playing at the highest level. The feisty winger will be hungry to get more first team minutes as he returns to full fitness, and Tyneside could be the perfect place for him to do it.

Kenedy 2.0?

While he might have a battle on his hands wrestling the free kicks away from Jonjo Shelvey, Lamela is a set piece wizard, and would give the Magpies an extra threat when they win fouls near the opposition area.

The 23-cap Argentinian is most comfortable playing from the right wing, where he can cut inside onto his left foot, so he could be the perfect upgrade if Ritchie joins Stoke. He can also play more centrally or even from the left, so could serve as an alternative to Kenedy if Chelsea price the Brazilian too high.

Lamela is incredibly skilful, and also has that extremely desirable knack of winding up opposition fans and players, something the fans on Tyneside will love just as much as the fans in North London do.

Of course, any winger that plays for Rafael Benitez needs to have bags of energy and the desire to work incredibly hard, so getting a player who has spent the last four seasons playing in Pochettino’s high-octane system would be a perfect fit.

In short, Lamela has the pace, skill, work ethic and fight of Kenedy, but with an extra dose of versatility and experience. If Tottenham do move for Pulisic, it could clear the way for the Magpies to snap up an experienced international for a reasonable price.
