Samuel Umtiti’s agent has revealed that the idea of a summer move from Lyon to Newcastle for his client has been “discussed”.
The 22-year-old centre-back is considered to be mong the top defensive talents in Ligue 1, and played a key role for his side as they challenged wealthy champions Paris Saint-Germain for the title last season.
Umtiti has continued to star for Lyon this term in what has been a relatively underwhelming season for the French heavyweights, seemingly piquing Newcastle’s interest.
The player’s agent, and brother, Yannick Umtiti, has claimed that a move to the Magpies has been talked about of late ahead of the summer:
“I was contacted in recent weeks by English agents who discussed the idea of Newcastle,” he told France Foot 01 (via talkSPORT).”
However, he want on to reveal that no serious offer has been received, but that his client will “consider” proposals if they’re made:
“But honestly, not a single concrete offer has been made at this point by an English club.
“We would consider if necessary an offer from Newcastle and the interest of clubs who will eventually position themselves this summer.”
Newcastle have signed a number of players from France’s top division over the course of the past few years and are reportedly interested in Umtiti’s team-mate, Alexandre Lacazette, too.
