Newcastle ace targeting Europa League glory

Moussa Sissoko Newcastle midfielderMoussa Sissoko is hopeful that the Newcastle can challenge for the Europa League trophy this season.

The French international joined the Magpies from Toulouse during January, in a cut-price deal.

He is in-line to face Ukrainian giants Metalist Kharkiv in the club’s last-32 tie, with a positive result at St James’ Park in the first leg on Thursday likely to be key in securing a passage into the next round.

Sissoko is hopeful that they can advance, and is targeting European silverware at the end of the season:

“It’s very important.” He is quoted by The Chronicle.

“I came here to win things and this gives us the chance to do that. For us there is everything to play for in the second half of the season.

“I always try hard to give the best account of myself in each game no matter what competition.

“But we can’t forget that it is about team performance.

“We all have to perform together.”

If Newcastle do win the competition, it would end their 44-year wait for a major trophy.

Sissoko has settled well since his January arrival, registering a number of impressive displays and important goals, including a match-winning double against Chelsea.

Upon his arrival, the 23-year-old took the number seven shirt, and is hopeful that he can cope with the pressure of wearing the iconic jersey, which likes of Kevin Keegan have also donned:

“When I arrived in Newcastle, I was told that many great players had done very well for the club wearing the number seven shirt. But I’m not giving myself any added pressure with that.

“I’m just going to go out there and play my own game, give as good as I can, and give the best performance I can.”
