Newcastle agree £9.7m deal to offload Thauvin

According to reports in La Provence (Shields Gazette in English), Newcastle United have agreed a £9.7m deal to sell flop forward Florian Thauvin back to Marseille.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the 23-year-old spent the second half of the 2015/16 campaign on loan with his former club and then re-joined them on loan during the summer after failing to impress at St James’ Park following a £12m move from the French giants in 2015.

It is believed, La Provence claim, that the attacker has now already made enough appearances (12) to trigger a permanent £9.7m deal next summer.

Thauvin

Will he be missed?

In a word, no. Thauvin arrived in the North East with a big reputation but he failed to fire in the Premier League for the Magpies, making just 16 appearances in all competitions, and was quickly labelled as a flop by supporters and pundits alike.

With players such as Matt Ritchie and Yoan Gouffran impressing for Rafa Benitez’s side in the Championship this term, they have enough attacking options available as they push for an instant return to the English top flight.
