Allan Saint-Maximin issued a brilliant response when one Newcastle United fan criticised his performance against Oxford United in the FA Cup.
The winger was unable to help Steve Bruce’s men break down League One opposition in the fourth round as they were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw.
And one fan took to Twitter to claim that it was his “worst game” since his move to St James’ Park.
Saint-Maximin, though, replied to the tweet with searing honesty and true class.
He said: “Not gonna lie, that’s true it’s my worst game so far, no excuses… Now I’m gonna work even harder to be more in shape! Thank you for the support (sic).”

One has to admire the sheer straightforwardness of Saint-Maximin here.
It is wholly right that fans would expect a £16.5m signing to show up in an FA Cup game against lower-league opposition.
While his performance was perhaps disappointing, his honesty will have won the supporters over.
This is an excellent show from the forward, especially during an era in which fans often feel footballers only care about how big their pay cheque is.
