Newcastle’s Mo Diamé says the team are just a few small details away from being a winning side, and is confident for the challenges to come.

The 30-year-old midfielder has found his form in recent weeks, starring in the win against Manchester United and featuring in last weekend’s 2-0 loss at Anfield.

“The team needs to stay confident and believe in what we are doing,” Diamé told the Chronicle.

“There are some little details we need to change and make sure we’re focused because we’ve dropped too many points already.

“We’ve been winning in some games and ended up drawing at the last minute. It’s just small details and those details must come at the end.

“We just have to keep going and stay focused from the first minute until the end.”

Rafa Benitez’s side were two goals to the good away at Bournemouth, but let the hosts back into it with two late goals. The loss at Liverpool was fairly one-sided, but Diamé insists the side is confident for the matches to come.

“We knew that it would be tough at Liverpool and that they’d start sharply with a good tempo,” Diamé said.

Benitez’s side did keep Liverpool’s flying attacking trio at bay for most of the first half, but a breakthrough from Mohamed Salah made life very difficult for the visitors.

The Magpies host Southampton in a relegation “six pointer” this Saturday before a three-week break and a clash with fellow strugglers Huddersfield Town at the end of the month.

“They are in the same situation as us so it is a massive game. We need to give everything on the pitch.

“We don’t think about the fixture gap, this is a massive game. That’s it. It’s massive for us and it’s like a final that we must win.”

Newcastle will be in a great position if they pick up three points against Southampton this week, with a win not only damaging Saints but boosting the Toon Army for the next huge clash with Huddersfield.
