European giants Barcelona have entered the race to land Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti, according to Spanish newspaper Sport.
The news will likely come as a blow to the likes of Newcastle United, who had previously been linked with the versatile defender.
The 22-year old French defender had been touted as a potential £10m target for the North East club should they retain their Premier League status this season.
However, the report claims the Blaugrana are one of several clubs to have commissioned scouting expeditions in order to run the rule over the French under-21 international.
Despite being of Cameroonian origin, the player has regularly appeared for Les Blues across various youth levels.
Their technical director, Robert Fernandez, was understood to have travelled to France to cast a watchful eye over him in the match against Paris Saint-Germain.
Sport go on to suggest the Magpies have ‘presented an offer’ for the man who is equally adept at left-back as he is at centre-half.
