Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has backed Toon stalwart Steven Taylor to earn a new deal at the club, report the Daily Star.
As the 12th anniversary of his debut with the club fast approaches, the 28-year old is expected to make only his fourth start all season.
A mounting injury crisis dogging the North East club has afforded the defender the chance to claim a starting berth.
His current deal is due to expire at St. James’ Park at the end of the season and talks have not yet opened regarding any form of extension.
“He has a chance to show what he can do now,” stated the former England boss.
“Everything’s dependent on performances and that goes for a lot of players here who are out of contract. Everybody is playing for their futures.’
Taylor has been a mainstay on Tyneside under a succession of different managers and won the Championship with his boyhood club when they were last relegated.
