Newcastle boss waits on striker swoop

Aston Villa's Darren BentAlan Pardew hopes Darren Bent will be a Newcastle player by the weekend, Sportsmail reports.

The Magpies boss needs to add numbers to his squad, with them set to travel to Portugal for a week-long training camp today.

It is no secret that Bent is top of Newcastle’s shopping list, though they have also been linked repeatedly with QPR’s Loic Remy and have also made an enquiry about Porto defender Rolando.

Speaking after his side’s 4-2 friendly victory against Motherwell last night, Pardew commented: “‘I would expect to be down the road with a transfer when we are in Portugal. I am hoping that Joe [Kinnear] and Lee Charnley (Club Secretary) get something over the line.”

It had been reported by The Daily Telegraph earlier this week that Pardew and Kinnear were due to meet to decide on their next course of action with regards to Bent.

They appear not to be the only side interested in him however, with Wolfsburg and Roma also considering a move for the marksman.

While desiring more attacking options, Newcastle were not short of goals during their game at Fir Park.

Haris Vuckic, Yoan Gouffran, Moussa Sissoko and Sylvain Marveaux all scored. The home side replied through Iain Vigurs and ex-Sunderland forward James McFadden.

Pardew was particularly pleased with the performance.

“I want our levels to be super high and it has shown tonight” he added.

“Haris was terrific on his return [and] Paul Dummett is knocking on the door of the first team.”
