Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles, rated at €7m (£6.3m) by Transfermarkt, has said via the Chronicle Live that he and his teammates are ready to have a “proper go” when they face relegation rivals Southampton at St James’ Park on Saturday, with the 24-year-old admitting it is a clash they “have to get three points” from.
The Magpies remained two points above the bottom three despite losing 2-0 against Liverpool at Anfield last weekend in a match where they rarely made much impact in the final third.
It will likely be a different story in front of their home supporters against a Saints side that lie one place and one point below them in the standings though, and the hosts will know that they have a great chance to boost their survival bid with two successive home matches against the south coast outfit and then Huddersfield Town on March 31.
Toon skipper Lascelles, who believes his team can beat anyone on their day, expects his side to put in an improved performance against Mauricio Pellegrino’s men and thinks they should go into the six-pointer full of confidence after beating Manchester United 1-0 in their previous Premier League fixture on their own turf.
Lascelles said, via the Chronicle Live: “We’ve got Southampton on Saturday and we have to be really confident going into it.
“We will get our heads down in training and listen to the boss, refresh and have a proper go at the weekend – because we will.”
“We have to get three points against Southampton.”
With 18th-placed Crystal Palace facing Chelsea and 19th-placed Stoke City hosting Manchester City, there is no doubt that this match is a great chance for Newcastle to move a step closer to securing their top flight status for another year.
