The Senegalese front-man only swapped the North East for London in January, but already looks to surplus to requirements in the capital.
New boss Jose Mourinho is unconvinced by Ba’s abilities, and has dropped him below new signing Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres, Romelu Lukaku and even Andre Schurrle – a midfielder by trade – in his forward pecking order.
As a result, the 28-year-old is set to leave the club, with Newcastle interested in bringing him back to St James’ Park.
The Magpies are keen on a season-long loan deal, but the only stumbling block is Chelsea’s eagerness to obtain a £3m fee for the deal.
Ba left Newcastle for £7m, so the ‘Toon’ are reluctant to shell out half of that figure for a temporary move.
Meanwhile, Alan Pardew’s move for Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis could be back on.
The Frenchman has been on the club’s radar for most of the summer, but with Loic Remy having arrived on loan from QPR their interest dropped.
However, Pardew is now keen to push through a late move to bolster his attacking options.
