Newcastle confirm interest in French star

Bafetimbi GomisNewcastle manager Alan Pardew has confirmed that the club are keen on Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis, according to reports from The Times.

The Magpies have been linked with a number of attacking reinforcements of late, with Papiss Cisse’s long-term future in the north east far from clear.

Gomis – who is also thought to be a target of both Cardiff and Swansea – is the latest name to have attracted Pardew’s attention, amid speculation that he could be set for a summer move.

Lyon are keen to part company with the French international in a bid to slash their wage bill, and are have openly admitted that if the right offer is made they will sell.

Pardew confessed that they are monitoring Gomis, and see him as the ideal man to boost their attacking options:

“We have expressed an interest in Gomis,” he said.

“We think that he’s a player who has great potential.

“He’s a French international who’s played at the highest level for his club.”

Having sold Demba Ba in January, Newcastle are short on central attacking options, with Cisse and Shola Ameobi their only experienced front-men.

Darren Bent is also believed to be on their wish list, although his wage demands and Aston Villa’s valuation could scupper any deal.

Newcastle fans, could Bafetimbi Gomis be your latest French star?
