Newcastle United have revealed that Matt Ritchie has pulled out of the Scotland squad ahead of their international friendly against Hungary on Tuesday night.

Ritchie played 87 minutes of Scotland's 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica on Friday, and had been in line to feature in Alex McLeish's second game back in charge of the national team.

However, a statement from Newcastle on Monday revealed that Ritchie had withdrawn Scotland duty, and would return to his Premier League club to be assessed.

It is currently unclear whether the attacker will be fit to face Huddersfield Town in the Premier League at St James' Park on Saturday afternoon.

Ritchie has scored twice and registered six assists in 27 Premier League appearances for the Magpies during the 2017-18 campaign.

Newcastle, who could have Islam Slimani available this weekend, will enter the clash with Huddersfield having lost just one of their last six league fixtures, with that run of form leaving them in 13th position in the table.
