Newcastle United could be taking a huge risk if they splash out on Atlanta phenomenon Miguel Almiron who, according to the Mirror, will cost upwards of £30m for any club interested in signing him.

What's the word, then?

The Magpies have been tailing the Paraguayan for a while now, and are reportedly very close if journalist Bruno Pont is to be believed - he has almost 400,000 Twitter followers, so he may know what he's talking about and would most likely not be tweeting out rubbish.

The same journalist also revealed that the 24-year-old MLS sensation prefers the Magpies to other English clubs who are currently courting him, as per the player's father.

This is arguably the biggest transfer saga in the Tynesiders' recent history, and may finally see them break their transfer record since it was last smashed on bringing Michael Owen to St James' Park for £16m over 13 years ago.

It would certainly be a surprising move for Rafa Benitez, as he has barely been backed by Mike Ashley since stepping foot in Newcastle - however, this big-money move does come with its risks.

What could go wrong?

Well, on the brighter side of things, Almiron appears to be a hugely talented player with the world at his feet having just won the 'MLS Cup' with Atlanta, after hitting 13 goals and recording 11 assists in 37 starts - truly astounding numbers.

However, it must be asked. When was the last time a player made the jump from MLS football to a league as demanding as the Premier League? I certainly can't think of one. The more common pattern is that players make the switch from a top league to America's top-flight as they look to wind down their playing days, such as David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard did, and so on.

Almiron does look a tremendous player, and there is no doubting he is one of America's best, but is Major League Soccer comparable to the gritty nature of England's top-flight?

For the rumoured fees being thrown around, coupled with the fact that Newcastle are in a relegation battle, added to the fact that this could be the only money Benitez gets to spend for a while (and breathe), is it wise for the Magpies to spend all their pocket money in one place?
