Newcastle’s hopes of luring Bafetimbi Gomis to St James’ Park have suffered a blow after Lyon coach Remi Garde admitted that he is hopeful that the striker will be staying put, according to reports from Sky Sports.
The Magpies have been heavily linked with the French international of late, and were believed to have been close to agreeing a deal for his signature just a few weeks ago.
However, with Loic Remy having finalised a season-long loan deal Newcastle’s eagerness to force through a move has cooled.
Reports claim that the North East side are still in the hunt for the 28-year-old, but their chances of concluding a transfer have reduced significantly after Garde said that a contract extension is in place for Gomis.
“He has had a contract extension proposition in his hands for months,” Garde told L’Equipe.
“I have no personal problem with Bafe. I am waiting for an outcome. We have to find a solution that could satisfy three parties.
“The most important thing is to have opened doors as the chairman did.”
Gomis’ future with the Ligue 1 giants has been unclear all summer, with the club having admitted that they could be forced to sell due to financial difficulties on numerous occasions.
But, their stance has altered recently, with chairman Jean-Michel Aulas declaring his desire to keep the attacker.
Newcastle fans, do you need Bafetimbi Gomis? Or will Loic Remy and Papiss Cisse supply the goals you need?
