Newcastle defender set for Serie A switch

Newcastle are bracing themselves for full back Davide Santon to join Roma this summer, according to talkSPORT.

The left back has struggled at Newcastle this season, but is still highly thought of in Italy.

He made a name for himself at Inter Milan, where he won two Serie A titles and broke into the Italy senior side.

Injuries hampered his career afterwards however, before he went on to sign for Newcastle in 2011.

Alan Pardew would be keen to keep the 23-year-old at St James’ Park, but their recent run of form which has included four consecutive defeats without scoring, may well persuade the Italian to return to his homeland.

Roma currently occupy second place in Serie A, and although they sit eight points behind leaders Juventus, their place in next seasons Champions League looks assured.

Santon would have more of a chance of breaking back into the Italian national side if he were playing in Serie A, as well as the Champions League.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is unlikely to let him go for anything less than £10million, but with Roma set for an influx of money through qualifying for the Champions League, he is well within their price range.
