Newcastle eyeing £16m Serie A striker as they step up survival plans

Newcastle are considering a move for £16m-rated Napoli forward Manolo Gabbiadini as they step up their plans to avoid relegation to the Championship, according to reports from The Times.

The Magpies have endured a largely disappointing 2015/16 so far, with, despite significant summer investment in senior players, Steve McClaren’s men having struggled for results, which leaves them in the relegation zone after 20 games.

Although Henri Saivet has been added to their ranks this month and a deal for Swansea’s Jonjo Shelvey is close, the North East club are still eager to make signings, with reports claiming that Gabbiadini is being looked at.

The Italian is among McClaren’s favoured targets alongside Loic Remy.

Swansea saw a £14.1m offer rejected by Napoli for the Azzurri star, with the Naples outfit holding out for £16m.

Such a sum would be a gamble from the ‘Toon’, who have spent the back ends of the past two seasons scrapping to avoid relegation.
