According to ABC Sevilla, Newcastle United want to sign Real Betis defender Junior Firpo in the January transfer window.
Firpo joined Betis at the age of 18, and played more than 70 times for Betis B before being promoted to the first team.
To date, the 22-year-old has made 30 appearances for Betis, scoring five times and registering four assists in the process.
Firpo has been in excellent form for Betis in recent weeks, scoring three times in their last four La Liga matches, including a goal in their 4-3 win over Barcelona.
A move to the Premier League would surely appeal to Firpo, but he will not be available on the cheap.
Indeed, it is understood that the defender has a £44m release clause in his current contract, which runs until the end of the 2022-23 campaign.
Newcastle would not even come close to being able to pay that figure, and even if they manage to negotiate a lower price, there will be a whole host of clubs in the mix.
It might well be that Magpies boss Rafael Benitez has to look at the loan market to improve his squad in the January window, and although a move for Firpo would be very exciting for the fans, it looks to be an impossible deal.
Firpo showed his excellent potential in Betis’ recent win at Barcelona, and more performances of that ilk will only bring more interest.
