Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to Saturday’s draw against Southampton, and they’re furious with Rafael Benitez for continuing to pick Ayoze Perez.
Perez has had an up and down career at Newcastle so far, as a few spells of imperious form have been sandwiched between long spells of really disappointing performances.
He was superb in the second half of last season as the Magpies romped their way from the relegation zone to a top ten finish, but he has had a torrid start to this campaign.
The 25 year-old, who has scored 30 league goals in 150 appearances on Tyneside, was perhaps expected to lose his place once Yoshinori Muto was up to speed, but the pair started together against Southampton on Saturday.
He had virtually no influence on the match at St Mary’s, registering no shots, no dribbles and just one key pass.
Fans suspect Benitez has some misguided favouritism towards his compatriot, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…
Perez hardly anonymous. Must have had 3 or 4 cameos rolling around on the pitch. I would rather watch Joselu.

Ayoze is still on holiday after the world cup isn’t he?

This is getting typical of Rafa now every week a sub around the 70th minute , insists on sticking with likes of Perez and using the same formation , system which clearly isn’t working. Do not want him to go but he needs to change his tactics #nufc #stopbeingstubbornfafa

I mostly can’t fault Rafa. Does what he can with the resources given to him. Ashley is clearly to blame. But we do need to question his strange Spanish favouritism, giving Perez and Joselu far more chances than any other player gets. #NUFC #SOUNEW #AshleyOut

I think Rafa has to shoulder some of the blame. Obviously main problem is Cashley, but these tactics and players aren’t working. Yet nothing gets changed. Longstaff can’t be worse than Diane. Perez isn’t good enough, Murphy on over Ritchie. At least we’d have some pace.

How Ayoze Perez still gets a start for a Premier League football club every single week without fail is completely beyond me

Ayoze Perez needs sent back to Spain ASAP. He makes Diamé look active
