Newcastle fans are absolutely butchering Chris Coleman after the Sunderland manager claimed Geordies don’t want the Black Cats to suffer.

Things are looking pretty rosy on Tyneside right now. The Magpies are flying towards a top ten finish, Rafael Benitez is looking happier every week, and the fans and players are more connected than they’ve ever been.

On top of all that though, their arch-rivals are in free fall, as Chris Coleman’s Sunderland are almost guaranteed to drop to League One with just four games left to salvage their Championship status.

Sunderland fans were furious when their club closed the cash turnstiles to prevent rival fans turning up to the final home games of the season, but Coleman insists Newcastle fans have been very positive towards him.

“You’re always going to get one team laughing at another, especially if it’s two derby teams,” Coleman said.

“But all the Newcastle fans I bump into are absolutely fabulous with me and don’t want to see us suffer.

“They want the derbies back, and all Newcastle fans I speak to - proper Newcastle fans - have just been proper people.

“In any walk of life or industry there are a small percentage who are unsavoury, but all the Newcastle fans I even talk to are absolutely fantastic.”

Newcastle fans are of course still tortured by “six in a row” taunts, and we’re not quite so sure the fans agree with Coleman’s assessment.
