England's options in central midfield are not exactly plentiful, and Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate recently admitted that his team do not have a Paul Gascoigne.

Jordan Henderson was the holding midfielder at the 2018 World Cup and against Spain on Saturday night, whilst Eric Dier featured in that position against Switzerland.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fabian Delph also started Tuesday's friendly with Switzerland, and the former is currently struggling for Premier League football.

There were calls for Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey to go to the 2018 World Cup, but the former Charlton Athletic youngster was left out.

The last of Shelvey's six England caps came back in 2015, and it does seem that Southgate does not really fancy the 6ft midfielder despite his obvious talents.

The Newcastle fans have again been reacting to the continued snub, with many finding it difficult to believe that Shelvey cannot break into what is a fairly average midfield.
