According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle United will have to pay £10m if they want to sign Swansea City centre-back Federico Fernandez this summer.

Florian Lejeune's serious knee problem has heightened Rafael Benitez's need to sign another central defender despite Fabian Schar recently joining the club.

It is understood that Newcastle wanted to sign Fernandez on loan from Swansea, but the Welsh outfit are demanding a permanent deal with a price of £10m.

It does seem an awful lot of money for a 29-year-old, and Newcastle do not exactly have the largest of transfer budgets.

The Premier League club's supporters have been reacting to the speculation on social media, and it would be fair to say that they want their club to swerve the deal.

That is not to say that Fernandez is not a decent central defender, but it is certainly debatable whether he would improve their back four as it stands.
