According to Sport, Newcastle United are nearing a season-long loan deal for Barcelona centre-back Marlon Santos, with the move due to go through on Thursday.

Work permit issues could yet scupper Newcastle's attempts to sign the defender, although it is thought that the Magpies are quietly confident that the deal will take place.

Marlon, who has also been linked with Southampton this summer, spent last season on loan at Nice - making 23 Ligue 1 appearances for the French outfit.

The 22-year-old moved to Barcelona from Fluminense on loan in the summer of 2016, and was a regular for Barcelona B during the 2016-17 season.

The deal was then made permanent in last summer's transfer window, before the move to Nice was sanctioned.

Marlon appears to be on the move once again as Newcastle close on a deal, and the Premier League club's supporters have been offering their views on the situation.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the less-than-impressed Newcastle fans can be seen below. Indeed, one supporter has even compared Marlon to a certain Titus Bramble:
