Newcastle fans destroy Pennant for dig at Benitez

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to some comments from Jermaine Pennant, as the controversial ex-player took a dig at Rafael Benitez.

Newcastle fans haven’t had too much to cheer about since the arrival of Mike Ashley, but Rafael Benitez’s time at the club has certainly brought some optimism back to the club.

The Spaniard took over shortly before the Magpies were relegated, and after guiding them back up at the first attempt he somehow managed to surge up the table for a tenth place finish last season.

Pennant clearly isn’t that impressed though, and has taken a swipe at the boss in a recent book about his career.

“On the pitch, often I can see what’s best. Ultimately you have to trust the players once they cross the white line. But with Rafa, it was constant directions,” the 35 year-old said.

“When you have so many instructions, it makes it so difficult. You’ve got some instructions and tactics in your mind and yet he’s shouting even more at you. All of a sudden you’re confused.

“You’ve got two sets of instructions in your mind and you’re left wondering what to do. It means that, suddenly, you mess up with a simple pass because your mind is all over the place. Honestly, Rafa was a nightmare like that.”

Pennant scored just three league goals for Liverpool in three seasons under Rafa, and blaming a manager for barking instructions is quite bizarre.

The winger had his fair share of behavioural issues during his career, so let’s just say Newcastle fans aren’t going down without a fight.
