According to Bild, Newcastle United are interested in signing Mainz forward Yoshinori Muto in this summer's transfer window.

It is not exactly breaking news that Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is desperate to sign a new striker this summer.

The Premier League club have been strongly linked with a move for West Bromwich Albion's Salomon Rondon, although that deal is yet to go through.

According to Bild, Muto is now being considered as a possible option, although Newcastle could well face competition from Premier League rivals West Ham United.

The 26-year-old scored 10 times in 30 appearances for Bundesliga outfit Mainz last season, before representing Japan at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Muto will see his current deal at Mainz expire next summer, although the German club do have the option of an additional year.
