Jetro Willems is fast becoming a fan favourite at St James' Park and that is evidenced by the praise he has received even when he was dissatisfied with his own performance against Southampton.

The left wing-back has been an important cog in Steve Bruce's side since arriving in summer, in both attack and defence, which has led many fans to call for him to sign permanently.

Newcastle were below par for much of the match against Saints, with fatigue a factor, but they managed to sneak a win and fans are in a buoyant mood as a result.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all 25 of these obscure Liverpool signings...

That may be what has led to such an outpour of encouragement for the Dutchman, though last week's cracking goal against Manchester City may also be present in their minds.

Willems has been a consistent performer since joining so he has garnered more sympathy amongst the fanbase, whilst the three points always means it is harder for them to be angry with certain individuals.

His admission shows the high standards he sets for himself and that should be regarded as a positive, as it should cause him to work harder and look to improve as much as he can with each passing game.

Many have told the 25-year-old that he is allowed an off day because of how good he has been, and considering the Magpies still only conceded once he wasn't atrocious by any means.

Meanwhile, Newcastle fans were full of praise for another defender after his recent display against Sheffield United.
