Newcastle fans like what they see of Islam Slimani, after the on-loan striker had a very positive impact off the bench in Sunday’s win.

Not too long ago, Newcastle’s January transfer business was looking like a bit of a disaster.

Kenedy was supremely talented but unproven, Martin Dubrvaka was unheard of, and Islam Slimani was missing with injury.

Despite plenty of criticism of the Magpies’ January window though, Rafa Benitez’s side are now absolutely flying, and even Slimani is now pitching in.

The Algerian striker arrived on Tyneside with a long-term thigh injury, but despite angering fans by appearing on international duty last month, most fans were impressed by his cameo in the win over Huddersfield.

After discussions this week about the possible permanent signing of the big 29 year-old, he showed his worth in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Arsenal, playing a major part in the winning goal.

Slimani came off the bench in the second half, and it was his powerful header that set up Matt Ritchie for the winning goal.

The 29 year-old has proven he can be a nuisance up front for the Magpies, and if he can find his scoring touch in the closing weeks he may earn himself a permanent move to Tyneside.

Fans liked what they saw on Sunday, and some are even suggesting he start the next match.
