According to reports in the South London Press, Newcastle United are interested in bringing Crystal Palace attacker Andros Townsend, rated at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, back to St James’ Park, and Magpies fans have been quick to react to the rumour.
The 26-year-old winger, who also played as a striker for the Eagles at times last term, joined the south London club from the Tyneside outfit in 2016 when they triggered a release clause in his contract set at just over £15m, according to the South London Press.
The England international certainly proved to be a key player for Roy Hodgson’s men during the 2017/18 campaign as they recovered from seven straight defeats with no goals at the beginning of the season to eventually finish in 11th position, with the forward scoring twice and providing a further eight assists.
Newcastle supporters, the majority of whom want the club to swoop for an Everton winger this summer, took to social media to give their thoughts on the link, and while one said he is “the new Andy Carroll” having been linked with yet another return to St James’ Park, another said “I’d love for us to re-sign him”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Another groundhog day with Townsend but I'd love for us to re-sign him. Had the release clause put in his contract for a reason, worked his arse off to try and keep us up and owed us nothing. Most importantly, Rafa loves him.

I’d take Townsend back in a heart beat……don’t give me the loyalty line & he jumped ship as there’s no loyalty in football these days!
He’s quality and would improve us #nufc
