Newcastle fans react as club is linked with shock move for Mario Gotze

According to reports in The Mirror, Newcastle United are one of five Premier League clubs interested in a shock move to sign Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Mario Gotze this summer, and Magpies fans have been quick to react to the rumour.

The Mirror says that the Tyneside outfit have made “tentative enquiries” about bringing the 2014 World Cup winner to St James’ Park, but they face competition from Leicester City, Arsenal, Everton and West Ham United.

The 26-year-old has suffered something of a fall from grace since scoring the winning goal for Germany in 2014, and the report adds that he wants to move to England to revive his career which has dwindled in Germany with Bayern Munich and now Dortmund.

Newcastle supporters, who have been quick to react with a link to another £13.5m attacker with one saying he is “the new Andy Carroll”, have taken to social media to have their say on the surprise link, and while one said “more Ashley lies”, another said “now that would be an incredible signing”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
