Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles, rated at £6.3m according to Transfermarkt, has missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate's latest England squad, and Magpies fans have all produced the same surprise, but perhaps understandable, reaction to the news.

The Toon captain looked to be in with a good shout of making the 27-man squad for the upcoming friendlies against Italy and the Netherlands later this month following some impressive performances at the back for the Tyneside outfit, but it is Burnley's James Tarkowski and Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson that have instead been given the opportunity to win their first cap.

Lascelles, who had been backed for a World Cup spot by his own fans, and teammate Jonjo Shelvey – who also missed out – have jetted off to Spain for the club's training camp, with Rafa Benitez's men's next fixture the Premier League clash against Huddersfield Town at St James' Park on March 31.

Newcastle supporters were quick to have their say on the blow for Lascelles via social media, and they produced surprise reactions.

While one said it was a "blessing in disguise", another said "good, less risk of injury".

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
